Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group is excited to welcome Dr. Joseph Raleigh, DVM, Diplomate ACVS (Small Animal) to the Surgery Service. Dr. Raleigh is originally from Thousand Oaks, CA. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of California – Davis’ Veterinary School and completed a rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. He returned to UC Davis for a rigorous three year residency in Small Animal Surgery before joining VMSG.
Dr. Raleigh's clinical training and expertise focuses on minimally invasive surgery (MIS) including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy, as well as interventional radiology (IR) techniques. Common MIS procedures include laparoscopic ovariectomy, gastropexy, cholecystectomy, adrenalectomy, lymph node extirpation and thoracoscopic lung lobectomy, pericardectomy, and thoracic duct ligation. Common interventional radiology procedures consist of intrahepatic portosystemic shunt attenuation, ureteral and urethral stent placement, subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) placement, among others.
Dr. Raleigh is focused on minimizing postoperative pain and other conventional treatment related complications by using MIS and IR procedures. In select cases (e.g., stenting a urinary obstruction), these techniques provide a novel treatment option when conventional therapy is no longer effective. Dr. Raleigh is thrilled to offer these unique MIS services for patients in our referring community.
Dr. Raleigh also supplements his clinical expertise with active and diverse research activities. He has published numerous scientific articles in the fields of MIS and IR and is recognized for lecturing at national and international conferences. In his free time, Dr. Raleigh enjoys being outdoors with his wife, son, and overly energetic labradoodle, Olive. As well, he is passionate about giving back to the local community and volunteers with the Special Olympics and Relay for Life (cancer awareness). He is also an avid sports fan and devoted follower of the Dodgers and Lakers!
