Acupunture

VMSG is proud to offer acupunture for our patients.

Medical acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, narrow needles into various sites or points, based on careful myofascial palpation to identify areas of pain, knots and tension related to various disease conditions. In this way, the source of discomfort or dysfunction can be determined.  Medical acupuncture is backed by scientific, repeatable studies and knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology.

Acupuncture uses needles slightly larger than the diameter of a human hair to stimulate specific points on the body in order to

  • Decrease pain
  • Increase blood flow
  • Repair tissue
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increase immunity
  • Normalize circulation

Although this practice began thousands of years ago, acupuncture is no longer shrouded in mysticism about “Qi” and “meridians”. Now there are well controlled, repeatable scientific studies that show how acupuncture works. Sticking a tiny needle in a particular spot causes release of the body’s own endorphins, opioids and serotonin to decrease pain. It also decreases the body’s own stress and cortisol levels and positively affects digestion.

Acupuncture research is continuing to present evidence of how this treatment can help improve acute and chronic pain along with a wide variety of other medical conditions including:

  • Arthritis
  • Disc disease
  • Paralysis
  • Cancer pain
  • Lick granulomas
  • Itchiness
  • Ear infections
  • Epilepsy
  • Kidney and bladder diseases
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Incontinence”
